Down the road from
Blackwood Gully

THE Great Ocean Road is one of the world's most spectacular and well-loved touring routes, and you'll find Blackwood Gully on this famous road at Lavers Hill just 35 minutes east of the Twelve Apostles.

Icons of the Great Ocean Road, the amazing Twelve Apostles stand in the powerful waters of the Southern Ocean with the dramatic backdrop of sea-cliffs sculpted by weather and relentless waves. The Apostles date back 20 million years, and have been shaped by the forces of nature. The relentless, stormy Southern Ocean and forceful winds gradually erode the limestone, forming caves then arches and finally the stacks that make this stretch of coastline so famous.

Plunging waterfalls amid peaceful cool, temperate rainforests are a highlight of any trip to the Otways. The nearest waterfalls to Blackwood Gully are Hopetoun, Beauchamp and Triplet, which are all within 20 minutes' drive of the restaurant.

Melba Gully, just 3km from Blackwood Gully, is sometimes called "the jewel of the Otways", for its pristine beauty. The Big Tree is more than 300 years old and has a circumference of many metres. Melba Gully is one of the wettest places in Victoria, with an annual rainfall of more than 2000mm. The gully is a dense rainforest of myrtle beech, blackwood and towering tree ferns. There is an understorey of low ferns and mosses which at night are lit up by glow-worms.

Crowes Buffer Stop, just off the Melba Gully Road, was the southern-most mainland railway stop on mainland Australia. The Old Beechy Rail Trail follows much of the original path of the narrow railway gauge which carried timber and dairy produce into Colac from 1902-1962. The trail is open between Colac and Beech Forest, and one day may continue through to the restored Crowes Buffer Stop which is well worth a quick detour.

The nearest beach to Blackwood Gully is the dramatic and beautiful Johanna Beach, which is a great spot for fishing, surfing, walking, and spectacular coastal scenery. Johanna, which was named after a ship wrecked there more than 160 years ago, is 15 minutes' drive from Blackwood Gully.

Blackwood Gully is conveniently located, in Lavers Hill, at the junction of the Great Ocean Road and Colac-Lavers Hill Road.
